When you've invited a new friend to the game, they'll be able to input your reference code (i.e. your friend code) between levels 5 to 15.
The option to enter the reference code can be found in the menu in the top right, and they'll need to put it in here in order for you to receive the gold reward, and for it to register towards an achievement.
